In the cavernous basement of the ex-BBC London building a fantastical market place is preparing to open. For sale is not your usual goods and services. Instead, here you can buy intimacy, a guilty pleasure, your fertility and even your life. Theatre Delicatessen invites, challenges and dares you to enter this world, inhabited by an eclectic array of performers who have taken over the space and are selling their wares...----* Building on the success of Theatre Souk (2010) and Bush Bazaar (2012), SPACED 2014 is the first development phase of our innovative Theatre Souk model - a festival that challenges both artists and audiences to explore the value and worth of theatre and performance financially, socially and psychologically.
Over three weeks, these 15 emerging companies, artists and theatremakers have been given space within the cavernous basement of the ex-BBC London building to create and develop a performance in response to the provocation "Is It Worth It?.
Each of the artists has been given seed funding from Theatre Delicatessen, and will be paid a living wage for the development process thanks to a grant from Arts Council England. As part of the process, the artists will receive advice and guidance through a series of masterclasses with groundbreaking theatremakers including David Jubb (BAC), Louise Mari (Shunt), Nick Barnes (Blind Summit) and Bryony Kimmings.
What emerges will be an explosive performance marketplace of intrigue and surprise, where the audience has to choose how much they are willing to pay to join the experience.
"Theatre Souk offers a tremendous experience of innovative and experimental theatre and a fantastic evening out."

When you couple this provocative cerebral debate with that giddy sense of festival excitement, face-painting, a cardboard pantomime and a Justin Bieber kidnapping story the result is a whimsical carnival of contemporary theatre that will ensnare you for hours... the exuberance of wares on offer at the market is strengthened by their contrasts and variety.
