Too Cool To Care
My one women show "Too Cool To Care" is about my life as a carer. To survive caring you need to be fully SAS trained in, Patience, Irony, Loneliness and Laughter. Making me the bitter PILL that makes everything OK.
Waiting in my usual spot in one of Charing Cross hospital's corridors a nurse walked by stopped smiled and said "You lost?" "No" I Replied "Just waiting for Mum. I'm her full time carer" with surprise she said "God you look good for a carer!!" It's the best and worst compliment I think I have ever received. Suddenly I was "Too Cool To Care" For my sanity I turned to stand up comedy. After all what else can you do when your disabled mother gets cautioned by the police for carrying a lethal weapon, which actually turned out to be a paper protest crown she had made herself to demonstrate against the council closing her day centre. It was quite fetching on her really. Or when your father is being tested for Alzheimer's and the Physiologists thinks it’s perfectly normal to ask “has his appetite in sex increased?” I Would have ask my mother but she suffers from short term memory loss and was far to busy adding sequins to her fully loaded protest crown. It’s also doesn't help that Dad looks like Father Christmas........ Most people wouldn't really put comedy and caring together unless you've heard the expression "If you don't laugh you'll cry?" It's amazing the giggles you can have in a hospital waiting room. I wanted to put a show together that was an honest representation of a carers life, shattering the image that we are all over weight, undateable with no ambition and have an unhealthy addiction to coffee mornings. Most of us had very successful carers and some of us still try to balance both, regardless of the obstacles and barriers our families and society put in our way. "Too Cool to Care" has been accepted to be part of the Camden Fringe program from 29th July - 1st August and the Edinburgh PBH Free Fringe from the 4th - 24th August. So how will your pledge help? You will helping fund the behind the scenes costs of the production from the London Venue hire, promotional material & my accommodation in edinburgh. You will also be helping me change the way people see caring as you are never "Too Cool To Care" Lolie xxx

Why did I write Too Cool To Care
In 2010 I met an amazing group of pensioners at my mothers day centre. For a year we stood shoulder to shoulder to fight to save our day centre from council cuts. We were known as the pensioners commune. One of our Ladies was called Jean Dell, she always said "You only have one life", and she actively encouraged me to do my comedy. In December last year we lost Jean but luckily before she left us she did see me perform. I know she would be proud and maybe blushing a bit as her her story is very much part of my show. Jean was and still is an inspiration.
