Khadija is 18

project created by Tim Stark, project category Theatre

Khadija is 18

"Khadija is 18" is the first play by the Angle Award-winning writer Shamser Sinha.
We are looking for funding towards the full production cost of the play at The Finborough Theatre in November.

"Khadija is 18" is a story from the frontline of multicultural Britain, and explores the lives of two teenage refugee girls in London's East End. Liza needs Khadija and Khadija needs Liza. When Khadija links up with Ade, things begin to unravel. Does Khadija care about Liza anymore? And what is Ade doin’ having sex with a ref girl? All the while the immigration clock is ticking down. Giving voice to the dispossessed and capturing the hopes and heartbreak of our young. Shamser Sinha is a rising voice of playwriting.

We have been offered a slot at The Finborough Theatre in November to direct "Khadija is 18" from 30 October to 24 November.

I first met Shamser through the Angle Theatre Award which set out to discover new BAME writers within Hackney and surrounding areas. I worked on Shamser's play with him and we presented a production-without-décor at Hackney Empire for 3 performances.

This will be the first full production of Shamser's work. He has had an attachment at the Royal Court and is now represented by Rachel Taylor in Mel Keyon's office at Casarotto Ramsey.

--- What Paul Miller says of Shamsers work: "Shamser Sinha’s first play, Khadija is 18 is a terrific debut play.  It has guts, with an eye for detail and, crucially, a distinctive personality. Everything a new dramatic voice needs".

--- Nic Wass formally at the Royal Court and now artistic associate at the Tricycle Theatre has described his work with these words: "Shamser's play, Khadija is 18, is striking in the vibrance, humour and accuracy with which he captures the youthful characters, the pressures they are under, and their rich slang. It is a humane and timely study of asylum, written with a rare zest for life." We are hoping to raise funding for the overall cost of the production.
